Straight from the Pinch Of Salt Department, rumours about that Aerosmith riffmiester Joe Perry may be considering hanging up his Les Paul for good.
That’s shocking, primarily because the ‘Smith just settled their well publicised differences with frontman Steven Tyler and have gone back out on tour. I note, however, that the tour has literally just kicked off properly. Shall I be Satan’s advocate and suggest that hinting that this might be Aerosmith’s last ever tour might scare a few more fans out to the arenas?
However, some sources are suggesting that the spat with Tyler may have made the guitarist jaded enough to contemplate retiring. Even though he recently praised the energy of the newly reformed band.
And according to an interview with Guitar World magazine, Perry is quoted as saying:
There are times I just want to get the f*ck out of this because I’ve done it all. I’ve been going long enough to prove what I wanted to prove, to get the girl I wanted to get, to make the money I wanted to make, to drink all the beer I wanted to drink.
I’ve played not exactly everywhere, but I’ve played enough places, so sometimes I’ll just sit here and think, ‘What the f*ck am I doing?’
All of this makes Joe sound about as old as Methuselah, and I feel a wee bit weepy for him as he realises that his greatest achievements are behind him. But Joe, what achievements they were! All those riffs, the legions of teenagers who grew up fusing rock and roll with sex thanks to the Toxic Twins.
So, what do you think? Will Perry pack up his plectrums at the end of this tour, or will be looking at a new Aerosmith album by this time next year?
