I’m baffled. Baffled by Brett. As someone who lives and breathes rock music, I should be supporting the long-hairs who audition for American Idol. But more often than not I find myself let down by them.
Case in point: Brett Loewenstern. A skinny guy with a mop of curly ginger hair who comes in and sings Bohemian Rhapsody for the judges. His intro video is strung out with him bleating on about being different and not being accepted at school and being “a red apple in a pile of green apples”.
I found myself thinking, how is this any different from the comedy boy scout last night who did an anti-texting and driving campaign?
And at the same time, Brett’s pictured playing guitar against lockers in a school corridor. You’re different, we get it. You bring your guitar to school and look introspective as you play. But that doesn’t quite wash with the incredibly supportive family he’s surrounded by, or his confidence with the judges – he swaps hair-product tips with Steven Tyler and says Ola to Jennifer Lopez.
Though the judges seemed impressed with Brett’s voice, I didn’t think it was particularly good. Tuneful? Yes. But was it an OMG experience? Probably not, compared with what Freddie Mercury might have delivered, and considering that Steven Tyler could wipe the floor with him vocally. It was the first point where I wondered if we’re ever likely to discover someone with Tyler’s abilities on a show like American Idol. By comparison, Brett was pretty ordinary.
But like I say, the judges raved about him. Jennifer Lopez says “Two goosepimples and it’s still only morning. His speaking voice…and then the voice that came out of you. Simply Red because of the hair, but also because of the soul.” Randy offered his usual lines: “Dude, that was hot. In New Orleans, that’s the way to nail an audition.”
Brett gets his golden ticket to Hollywood, but can he really deliver the goods on stage? Or – GASP! – am I judging this kid too harshly?
