American Idol 2011: Clint Jun Gamboa auditions with ‘Billionaire’

26 year old karaoke host Clint Jun Gamboa auditioned for American Idol in San Francisco. It’s hard to know what to say here – there’s no sob story to latch on to, just a fairly likeable dude with the world’s most annoying pair of glasses. Apologies to Elton John for that last statement.

Clint’s ‘story’ is that he’s too damn good for karaoke, so he’s auditioning for the world’s largest karaoke competition! All the punters at the karaoke bar where he works tell him he should be up on the big stages.

And so we find him standing in front of the venerable Randy, Steven and Jennifer, singing Travie McCoy’s excellent Billionaire. There’s no doubting the quality of this guy’s voice. The judges obviously love him too. But standing there in his cardigan and jeans, Clint doesn’t exactly scream star quality to me. Could he be your American Idol?

P.S. He’s going to Hollywood!

What the judges said:

Steven Tyler: The notes, and the way you sang that song, was brilliant.

Jennifer Lopez: The vocal was so beautiful. Really nice.

Randy Jackson: One of the best I’ve ever seen in San Francisco. Definitely yes from me.

Cor blimey Gerard. Because I have never heard the song ‘Billionaire,’ I thought the heading to this article actually meant that the guy was singing with someone who was a billionaire standing next to him or auditioning with him. This is why I read the article as I wondered why a billionaire would want to audition of american Idol. Silly me.
