American Idol 2011: Stefano Langone goes through to Hollywood

Second San Francisco auditionee Stefano Langone begins his audition by churning out a string of cliches. He tells the judges about his “crazy stuff in my life”, his “long road” and also about his “sweat and tears”.

You know what’s coming next, right? A story about an extremely vague “accident” that left Stefano seriously injured and scarred. Here’s the thing though – he doesn’t mention the nature of the accident. I don’t mean to be cruel here, but what’s the big secret – was it an industrial accident, a car crash, a suicide attempt? Those scars on his forearms were rather ominous.

Anyway, let’s not get hung up on the details – what was Stefano like as a singer? Well, he sings I Heard It Through The Grapevine for the judges. He’s got a good voice, and Randy Jackson seems fond of his vocal phrasing. And to Stefano’s credit, he has a charismatic smile throughout his performance. It’s hard not to like the guy with the piano belt buckle!

Needless to say, Stefano charmed his way into the judges’ hearts, and you’ll be seeing him shortly in [[American Idol (2011 Series)|American Idol]]‘s Hollywood round!

What the judges said:

Randy Jackson: Stefano, that was nice man. Nice voice, dude. Very strong, very nice voice, man.

Jennifer Lopez: Definitely here for a reason. I think you have real star quality, you know. You have movie star good looks and on top of that, your voice does have a nice tone to it. You obviously have a big S.T.A.R. all over you.

Steven Tyler: You survived that accident for a reason, and I’m about to tell you why. You’re going to Hollywood!

@pickles12 – On shows like American Idol, people’s background stories are very often played up to make people relate to them. What I was simply pointing out was that in the episode above, Stefano talked about an accident without mentioning what actually happened. That raises alarm bells with me.

I’m one of those people who believes that you have to have a healthy scepticism when it comes to stories on ‘public vote’ shows. After all, they’re there to hook you in and make you spend money on votes.

But you’re right, American Idol finally cleared this up during the Hollywood round. Thanks for commenting though – I hope you’ll stay with us for more American Idol coverage this season!
