How do you folks feel about [[American Idol (2011 Series)|American Idol]] auditionees repeating their first audition songs for Hollywood Week?
Because that’s exactly what Garner’s Scotty McCreery did for his Hollywood solo spot. He repeated his performance of Josh Turner’s Your Man. To perfection.
And he wasn’t alone in repeating his first audition – 28 year old Jackie Wilson and 27 year old Jerome Bell both used this trick and ended up with a pass to the Hollywood group round where groups of hopefuls have to sing together (and where American Idol notoriously gets bitchy)
The problem with doing this is that it gives the viewers at home the impression that they aren’t strong on any other songs. Scotty himself said he wanted to show the judges his strongest hand. But if Your Man is Scotty at his best, then surely everything else he does is going to pale in comparison?
I just wish he’d tried something different – this video shows that he’s a great country singer (and that maybe he doesn’t actually need Idol with a baritone voice like that):
Excellent quite from Jennifer Lopez though – she said she’d “Come to the birthplace of hip-hop to fall in love with a country singer.”
