GOT TO DANCE

Sunday 16th January, 6pm, Sky 1 HD

  • Notorious ice queen of the panel, Kimberly, is moved to tears by a dance group from Essex
  • Ashley is propositioned by a ladies formation team from Kent
  • One act believes he can dance better than Michael Jackson

The search continues for the nation’s best dance act as Davina McCall and the Judges, Ashley Banjo, Adam Garcia and Kimberly Wyatt travel to Dublin, Glasgow and London looking for an act worthy of the quarter of a million pound prize fund.

In order to make it onto the Judges shortlist, and to be in with a chance of winning the life-changing prize money, the acts must receive two or more gold stars from the Judges. All the acts that make it onto the shortlist will then be considered by the Judges for one of the 28 coveted spots in the live semi-finals.

With over 2,300 applicants, the infamous Got to Dance domes witnessed a staggering 58 different dance styles on display, with the youngest contestant a tiny 3 years old and the oldest a respectable 79 years.

DANCE 21 MELT KIMBERLY’S HEART

The dance teacher of this group explains why they have come to audition today - “We’re Dance 21 and we come from Essex. We’re a dance group for children with Down ’s syndrome and their siblings. We started 10 years ago. The youngsters gain an enormous amount from classes - confidence, coordination, mobility. I’m excited for them because they are being given this chance to do something we have wanted to do for a long time and they deserve the recognition”.

As the28 strong group of 5-21 year olds take to the stage, Davina is waiting with their mothers and predicts tears – “you’re going to cry aren’t you? I’ll get the tissues, let me get the tissues”.

With tears of pride  from the mothers on Davina’s shoulders backstage, the group perform to “Hey Mickey. “ and are met with positive feedback from all the Judges. It is notorious ice queen of the panel, Kimberly who is most overcome telling the group between tears, “sometimes dance is all about celebrating and you just really made me happy with that”

And with Kimberly feeling emotional, she leaves the dome to say goodbye to Dance 21 one more time –  telling them “I thought you guys were amazing, I have not been that happy in really long time, that’s because of your performance.”

HER E COME THE GIRLS – HEADING TOWARDS ASHLEY

Hailing from Maidstone, this ladies formation dance team are aged 23-65 and started up when they couldn’t find enough men to take part, although they won’t give up in their search for the perfect partner.  “It’s very difficult to get a male partner, the ratio of men to women – there are far more women. But if there are any hot men watching they can come and join!”

Tia Maria from the group has her eye on one man in particular – “I want to impress and marry Ashley. That would be the icing on the cake to speak to Ash, as he likes to be known, oh sorry...”

After a routine to Big Spender, Tia Maria tries to flirt her way onto the shortlist – “Ashley, would you marry me? If you did I would be Tia Maria Banjo sand that would be so cool” By way of reply Ashley chooses to change his star to gold – “I think you’re worth  a gold just for the pure fun factor. Come one guys (to other Judges), we’ve got to see these guys back, give ‘em a gold, give ‘em a gold.”

Not content with just trying to sway his fellow Judges, Ashley also get s on stage for a hug with Tia Maria but gets a bit more than he bargained for as she goes in for a kiss!

CRAZY POPPER

Chris Childs is a 23 year old from Essex who goes by the name of ‘Crazy Popper’. “I started dancing when I was 18 and it went from there, when people see me dance, it gets their attention”. Including that of his current girlfriend, Charlene who says “We met in a nightclub and when I first saw him dance I was a bit, oh my god, what is he doing?!” Chris works in a warehouse and says he “always dancing, anywhere”.

To judge his performance, Kimberly invent s a new word – “Ridonculous”  and Ashley tells him it is “best example of popping we’ve had on Got to Dance” and praises his waving technique – but will he be waving his way to the shortlist?

SHOCKERELLA

An all girl street crew from Manchester aged between 10 and 14 claim they are “like sisters” even though they have only been together for just 9 months.

The group are dressed in black jumpsuits with silver painted faces and are determined to stand out and be noticed - “We don’t want to be like the other dancers that are all in shorts and jogging bottoms. We work really really hard after school. We run to dance, we miss birthdays, and we miss programmes we really want to watch on TV. “

With the Judges describing their performance as “the biggest surprise all series” – will they have shocked their way to the shortlist?

“BETTER THAN MICHAEL JACKSON”

Afshin, is a 38 year old from London who believes he is better than Michael Jackson at dancing – “I’m a great dancer and everyone tells me I am great dancer. Since I was 15 years old I have been inventing my own dance moves. It’s like Iranian dancing with break dancing. I get my inspiration from Michael Jackson and I believe I dance better than Michael Jackson actually. I got the looks, I got the moves and I got the good body. What more do they want?”

During his energetic routine, Afshin chooses to remove his shirt and continue to dance with his top off - but will exposing himself gain him favour with the Judges?

MASTERS OF DANCE

Next to auditions are three ‘B-boys’ from Swindon. Tatum is 31, Ross is 29, and Ethan is their mini secret weapon at just 6 years old

Tatum and Ross are brothers and break dance teachers who met Ethan a year and a half ago when he came to their class and he became an inspiration to them - “Ethan came along, and I could just see me when I was 6. Teaching is such a rewarding feeling. “

But will their secret weapon help them to win over the Judges?

CHRIS AND WES (20), STREET DANCE DUO FROM LONDON

Chris from this street dance duo hopes that his high-top hair style will catch the eye of the Judges and he has hopes for impressing Kimberly in particular – “I’m looking to catch the eye of Kimberly – she’s good looking but I’m not here to impress her for that, I’m here to impress her for the dancing”

And in his bid - Chris promises her she can mess up his high-top hair if he doesn’t deliver on his next performance if she puts him through…
