UK Singles Chart - Top 10 - 7 March 2010

It's time for the latest and greatest music on the UK pop scene. Here's this week's top ten singles.

For me, it's a mixed bag. Some great tracks, but mostly rubbish. I hate the new Rihanna single. It's another step toward destroying her image and potentially her career. And Cheryl Cole makes a third single out of Parachute, which is frankly the best of a very inconsistent and unsatisfying solo career so far.

1. Tinie Tempah - Pass Out: He's been to Southampton but has yet to check out Scunthorpe's many charms. I thought I'd hate this, but the mix of electro-beeping melody, dark-ish rapping and crowd chants punctuating the song is potent stuff. Yeah, I like it.
2. Rihanna - Rude Boy: God love 'er, but this is the best thing I've heard from Rihanna in 3 or 4 singles worth of material. And even at that, Rude Boy is woeful compared to her past triumphs.
3. Jason Derulo - In My Head: I reviewed this single earlier in the week. I'm becoming quite the fan of Derulo, and I love the soft rock vibe that this track carries.
4. Ellie Goulding - Starry Eyed: In which Ellie reminds us that everybody is starry eyed. Yer usual innoffensive pop pap, but I'm not a fan.
5. Florence/Dizzee Rascal - You Got The Dirtee Love: Fresh from their collab at the Brits, Florence and Dizzee have created a monster with this new version of You Got The Love.
6. Alicia Keys - Empire State Of Mind (Part II): Alicia's New York anthem clings on to the charts effortlessly. And when you consider some of the crap in the top ten this week.
7. Timbaland ft Katy Perry - If We Ever Meet Again: And this collaboration between Timbo and Katy Perry looks like it's good for another couple of weeks too. You all know my thoughts on this - decent pop track, but shows neither artist at their best.
8. Wiley ft Emeli - Never Be Your Woman: Wiley gives an old one-hit wonder a grimey re-working along with Emeli Sande. It's got a lot more soul than the Mad City original, but not quite as much swagger as I expected.
9. Boyzone - Gave It All Away: My problem with Boyzone's new material is that it simply isn't as strong as the new stuff Take That have wowed us with. Still a good showing at number 9 based on strong fan support,  but their new music needs to have wider appeal.
10. Cheryl Cole - Parachute: Ah, Chezza. My heart has been bleeding for you ever since Cole-gate started. Cole-gate, geddit? My favourite of the three solo singles she's released from her 3 Words album. 

In other news, Daisy Dares You broke the chart with a great track, Number One Enemy. Owl City departed the top ten, so hopefully that'll be the last we see of that song. And Ke$ha continues to be annoying, this time with 3OH!3.
