This one was easy to predict – Cher Lloyd was the first act to get eliminated in the grand X Factor 2 Day final. It’s said that the Malvern singer only got this far due to the wrangling and manipulation of Simon Cowell – notably turning the semi-final into a sing-off and sending Mary Byrne home last week.
So, it was with cries of ‘FIX FACTOR’ ringing in people’s ears that the final began this week. Simon even wrote a letter to The Mirror in an attempt to kill off the rumours that the show was rigged.
Regardless, Cher Lloyd has ridden a wave of negative publicity since she joined the show. She’s been called all manner of names in the press – from brat to chav to diva. I can’t help noticing that Cher and Katie Waissel both suffered negative press, and both were perceived to have had Uncle Simon fix things for them to stay on the show. Is it possible that Simon’s starting to lose the magic touch?
In her final night, Cher performed a widely disliked mashup of 369 with Get Ur Freak On. It showed her vocals at their weakest. However, on her duet with Will.I.Am, she stunned us all with a strong vocal on Where Is The Love, but slightly less – and we blame Will for this – on I Gotta Feeling.
On a personal note, it was right that she went home tonight. Despite the promise Cher shows, right now she’s the weakest vocalist on the show. Rebecca, Matt and One Direction are far more polished. In a year or two’s time, Cher may be a much better performer, and ready for a spot in the pop charts.
