I read on here that easy-listening ‘legend’, Michael Buble was claiming that Canadians are ready to take over the world. It’s feasible. Beginning with the domination of Justin Bieber and ending with fantastic dramas like [[Being Erica (TV Series)|Being Erica]] and Lost Girl, the Canadians continually impress me.
Which brings me to the latest Maple Leaf-branded export: Hedley, four rockers from Vancouver who have an enormous hit on their hands with Perfect, the most aptly named single this year. It’s an epic piano power ballad that I’d define to you as The Fray meets One Republic, but with a lot more kick behind it.
So big is this song in their native country that the video beat Justin Bieber for a Much Music Video Of The year Award. Hugely satisfying to win an award in the first place, but to beat Bieber? Write that one down in your diary.
Without further ado, here’s the video in question. So you can see what all the fuss is about:
See what I mean about the Ryan Tedder influence? Still, I’ve had a listen to Hedley’s MySpace page, and they have a much more varied repertoire – some fantastic upbeat rock and electropop tunes. So Perfect works well as a piano anthem, but hopefully it’ll serve as a foot in the door for the band. Go and listen to their other tunes!
Fascinating fact: Hedley frontman Jacob Hoggard was a runner-up on 2004’s Canadian Idol, which makes Perfect even more…perfect, because it’s be a brilliant tune to play over failed auditions on reality TV talent shows.
