More bad news for Idol runner-up [[Crystal Bowersox]] – after losing out in the American Idol finale to [[Lee DeWyze]], Crystal’s boyfriend Tony Kusian has broken up with her and gone back home to Ohio.
Crystal revealed the news on Ryan Seacrest’s KISS-FM show yesterday morning, saying that “He wasn’t cool with the lifestyle”. She claims that they mutually agreed to break up on the night of the [[American Idol (2010 Series)|American Idol]] final performances, but that they’ll remain friends. Speaking on the break-up, Bowersox says:
We’re both logical, grown adults. He’s a small town guy and it’s fine. But I’m a small town girl but I want this. I want this more than anything — this career, this lifestyle. I didn’t think he was up for it. He didn’t think he was up for it.
What I’m not clear on is if Kusian is the father of Crystal’s child or not. Certainly, he seemed thoroughly supportive during the Idol live shows. I’m also not clear on what he thought was going to happen – or indeed if he thought Crystal was going to win the competition and just come straight home: your involvement with American Idol doesn’t just end with the finals. You’ve presumably got to prepare for the summer tours. If you’re lucky enough to sign a record deal, you’ll be wanting to set that up – possibly relocating to L.A. full time to record and promote your music.
Frankly, I’m surprised it took them this long to figure that out.
I wonder if there have been any other romantic casualties of American Idol? There have to have been a few where contestants have left their old lives behind and had to break-up with a girlfriend or boyfriend because it didn’t work over long distances.
As a footnote, Kara DioGuardi was a guest on Seacrest’s show as well, and she was much more mercinary. Her advice to Crystal? “You have to do your music. It’s not a choice for you. It’s what makes you whole. If somebody can’t hang with that — I’m sure he’s a lovely guy but right now this is your dream.” Classic. That woman is blinkered by the ‘biz.
