It’s not quite a Richard Curtis movie, but tonight’s EastEnders packed in a wedding (possibly the shortest in the show’s history) and what looks like a potentially fatal accident for poor Danielle. As tonight’s episode ended, the undertakers were already moving in to take measurements.
Lording it over the whole episode, sinister Archie striking terror in Peggy for daring to wear a plunging neckline to her own wedding, and skulking around as Danielle tried to reveal everything to a baffled Ronnie. He had all the hallmarks of a modern day Dracula.
I’m not normally a soap watcher, but I’ll tune in for special occassions like this. Samantha Janus and Lauren Crace put on an emotional rollercoaster of an episode. Up to this point, Danielle (played by Crace) has been mildly annoying with her perma-constipated expression and fumbled attempts to reveal her secret to Ronnie. In the lead up to tonight’s thrilling episode, Archie has been trying to suppress Danielle’s secret, once with electrical wire.
After seeing Danielle into the street outside the Queen Vic, Ronnie gives a sugary speech for Archie, but as she gives the toast, she almost swallows the locket that Danielle placed in her glass. My heart thudded at that point – you could tell Archie was rumbled.
Hilariously, the rest of the guests at the wedding (all long-term Albert Square residents) looked on impassively as Ronnie revealed Archie’s deception. Only Peggy looked confused for a moment as her worst suspicions about Archie were confirmed. Archie puts the final nails in his own coffin when he says (oblivious to Peggy standing behind him) “I’ll snap my fingers and Peggy will come running.”
Within moments though, Ronnie catches up with Danielle. However, Danielle has graduated to zombie-acting at this stage and stands in the middle of the road just long enough for Janine to ‘butcher’ her. Geddit? Butcher? LOL!
Brilliantly, Janine and Stacey stand comepletely horror-struck as Ronnie cradles her long-lost daughter in her arms. Danielle’s hair is heavily matted in blood at the back and she fades into unconsciousness. The big question is, is she dead as Ronnie seems to think, or should we wait for that ambulance crew to confirm or deny it?
Best episode in ages. I hope Danielle lives to look harrowed another day though.
