Primeval - S03E04 - G-Rex Bites: episode review
Didn't take them long to wipe Nick Cutter off the opening credits to Primeval, did it? And signifying how important Jason Flemyng's character will become, Danny Quinn was the character who replaced him. To be honest, DQ is a helluva lot more animated than Cutter was in the first three episodes of this series, so I'm immediately sold on him.
And for his first 'proper' episode, they really pushed the boat out, with Connor working out how to close Anomalies, the appearance of a Gigantasaurus, which was nowhere near as cute and cuddly as last week's creatures.
All the same, DQ has a bit of the unlikely action hero about him - but his attempts to help the team, ending in his flying a helicopter into an anomaly to distract a hungry G-Rex were hilarious. When asked whether he could fly the chopper, he quipped back "I've had two lessons, but they went really well!"
Sorry to say, I kind of watched the episode on autopilot, which means I shouldn't really be reviewing it, but for the sake of completeness, I will! There was far too little of Laila Rouass in this episode - her character still has to make her mark on the series in my opinion. And just a query about the creepy journalist - did he get trampled under the feet of G-Rex, dragged into the anomaly or did he somehow escape? The end was a little confusing for me.
However, as someone who's coming around to this series, I like that we have Danny Quinn and Sarah Page as newbies that we can learn about. While veteran Primeval fans like Priya have awesome background knowledge on the series, it's nice to have characters that we're all just discovering!

Hello :) I definately agree
Hello :)
I definately agree about Laila Rouass's character still needing to make her mark. When I saw Jason Flemyng had first credit I believe my exact reaction was *eyes popping out of head* 'WHAT? OMG!' in a mixture of delight and horror because whilst I knew that, and am thrilled about, him being a permanant fixture - it does seem like they're setting him up as a replacement for Nick Cutter rather than having him an a hero unto himself. Don't get me wrong - he seems to have a completely different demeanour to Nick Cutter but there was such a huge focus on Nick Cutter in the first series (like you say you don't really see this in S3 because they're trying to wean us off him) - and just the fact that Helen is such a huge villain and she is/was his wife.
Anyhow, I just don't like the idea they'd be all 'OH HAI I BROKE UR HERO SO I MADE U ANOTHER' rather than just settling back on the team efforts for a while (especially as I think this would allow for a greater development of Sarah's character rather than her just being SexySarahPage in the background...). Oh, and you forget about Christine Johnson as a new character - she's sure to bring up trouble even if she's not as bad as Helen. In my head, Christine Johnson and Lester (again, we haven't had enough of his acidic quips) have had a sexual relationship in the past. Oh, by the way, if you didn't know - that thing Christine Johnson was looking at in the room at the beginning was a Future Predator - they're pretty nasty beasties with extremem speed and agility - we think they've descended from bats because they 'see' via sonar. Oh, and as for Becker as a new character, he was growing on me last week but I always seem to forget he exists and then I see him and wish he didn't.
The sleazy journalist, who has actually appeared in an S02 episode, and his boss - I think you assumed that, like Nigel Marvin, they got eaten/trampled but it really wasn't fully clear.
Broken Heroes
Brilliant! You're clearly suffering from Cutter's loss! Maybe ITV should have offered a support number for Primeval fans devastated from his death?
Definately - didn't they
Definately - didn't they actually have one of those year after Pop Idol or Big Bro or something for fans who were having withdrawal?!
Cutter was serious buisness. And it was so soon after oh-Stehen-you're-so-pretty-but-so-stupid...
