Primeval - S03E09 - It's all kicked off now!
I've just caught up with Saturday night's Primeval, and wow, isn't the action heating up now? The girl from the future appears to have intricate knowledge of anomalies, but it still came as a surprise when she turned out to be Helen Cutter in a cool pixel mask - Disguise 2.0!
Elsewhere, the episode was bogged down with a storyline about prehistoric rhinos - but yielded a few comic moments with a camper who got stripped down, dressed in a bra and tied to a tree. Hardly the best attire for fighting off dinosaurs :)
I've been loving the living arrangements between James Lester and Connor - two completely incompatible souls living under one roof. By the time this episode comes around, Connor is officially limited to a 3 foot square area in the middle of the living room! I loved Lester's numerous notes all around the house - I think if Connor lived with me, I'd have something similar. He's such a hapless no-hoper!
And on the subject of Lester - he got some good lines, especially when Helen Cutter was holding a gun to Christine Johnston's head (:Belated spoiler alert!) "This isn't funny" Christine pleads. "You should try standing over here" he quips in reply. Christine has been a pain in Lester's arse for quite some time now, but it looks like she's met a pointy-toothed death!
If my review thus far is slightly out of sequence, that's because the episode was bunged full of action again. Primeval always has a plethora of threads running at any one time. Personally, I prefer the developing Helen Cutter vs the ARC stories to the beast of the week story. And thankfully, next week's series finale looks set to bring Helen Cutter's story to an end, in the terrifying post-apocalyptic Earth of the future.
While I like that world, its construction bothers me. It has several races of crazy monsters which apparently evolved, yet it's filled with modern-day cars and buildings. What gives? But then, Primeval suffers from attention to detail: in this episode, a quad supposedly tossed by a dinosaur looks like it was carefully placed there. The music also is an irritation - it has no atmosphere and adds nothing to the tension in the show. Just a couple of things that need attention if Primeval is to 'evolve' into a better show.
