It seems no American awards show is complete these days without an offensive Englishman ripping into their country’s top celebrities. Russell Brand and Ricky Gervais practically have the market for glittering awards shows sewn up between them at the moment.
As for Gervais, there’s a guy who knows how to make enemies in style. His monologue at last night’s Golden Globes took pot-shots at the biggest names in Hollywood – Hugh Hefner to Johnny Depp, Charlie Sheen to An Unspecified Well Known Scientologist Who Might Possibly Be Gay and the Sex And The City girls women.
Nothing for Sex And The City 2. I was sure the Golden Globe for special effects would go to the team who airbrushed that poster. Girls, we know how old you are. I saw one of you in an episode of Bonanza.
His gag about Hugh “The Walking Dead” Hefner was particularly well received – he advised Hefner’s financee “just don’t look at it when you touch it”. Robert De Niro and Halle Berry were both seen cracking up at this one (the visuals were priceless), and Alec Baldwin was seen wiping his eyes afterward.
There was the odd duff joke thrown in as well though – I groaned when he suggested that the ending to Lost was “that the fat one ate them all”.
Still, he more than made up for it with a lengthy attack on the Johnny Depp/Angelina Jolie film The Tourist when he claimed that the Hollywood foreign press were bribed to nominate it. With a Cher concert:
How the hell is that a bribe? Do you want to go and see Cher? No. Why not? Because it’s not 1975.
