Super-producer/record company boss/etc Jimmy Iovine makes his first appearance as a ‘mentor’ on [[American Idol (2011 Series)|American Idol]], and gives Jacob Lusk some advice which seems to contradict what the judges are praising him for. Iovine tells Jacob not to oversing all of the time. It’s sound advice too, because Lusk operates on high-intensity vocals 99% of the time which leaves no room for light and shade in his performances.
Jacob makes up a trio with two other awesome vocalists – the beautiful Naima Adedapo and the powerful-voiced Haley Reinhart. The group sing The Beatles’ The Long And Winding Road. It’s a beautiful rendition, and they gel really well as a group. Jennifer Lopez is the first to praise the singers:
Very, very nice. I loved that. That was really good, you guys. You all sounded really great, really made it your own. If you’re a singer, you should be able to sing anything. You should be able to learn the notes and sing it and make it your own. Each one of you did that individually.
Steven Tyler chimes in with: “That was stupendous. That was so over the top. Jacob, that was just beautiful. It was so well done.” And Randy Jackson contradicts Iovine with this comment: “Don’t hold back, Jacob. Ever. Go for it baby, you got the gas in the car. Drive it and go. Put the pedal down.”
Three very strong singers in that group – we already know Naima Adedapo and Haley Reinhart got through to the next stage of the competition. Hopefully Jacob Lusk will follow them, because I’d love to see what they give him to sing on the live shows.
