Wanna know what’s on constant repeat on the Unreality Shout iPod? It’s the latest Jane’s Addiction single, Irresistible Force.
If, like me, you can only cite Been Caught Stealing as the only Jane’s Addiction song you know, this might come as a bit of a shock. Irresistible Force a tantalising mix of epic anthem and mellow, trippy tune. It’s ethereal and dreamlike, but manages to retain a wonderful chorus and a brilliant guitar solo courtesy of Dave Navarro.
Main Jane, Perry Farrell enigmaticallyt claims the song is about cosmic sex, which when you think of it, lends a subtle erotic charge to the song:
The Big Bang was actually sexual intercourse, like cosmic sexual intercourse.
Interplanetary sex aside, there’s simply something wonderful about this track. It’s got those mercurial qualities where words alone can’t describe how good it is. I feel transcendant when I listen to this tune. What’s truly stunning is that a veteran band of Jane’s Addiction’s vintage shouldn’t be putting out such inspirational material. When bands get to a certain age, their songwriting becomes tired and formulaic.
Maybe it’s because Jane’s mixes the lineup up every so often that the sound and songwriting is so fresh here.
And I haven’t even touched on the brooding, spacey tour de force that is the video. Very sexy. That’s all I can say. And Dave Navarro looks like Jason Momoa’s skinnier brother – all exotic and covered in mascara. Have a look for yourselves:
Irresistible Force is the second single from Jane’s Addiction’s soon-to-be-released album, The Great Escape Artist. The album’s due out on 27th September. The single might be the best song you’ll hear all year.
