Jordin Sparks performs new single ‘Battlefield’ on ‘American Idol’

Well I dunno how many of you guys tuned into American Idol this weekend but if you did you were seriously in for a treat. Normally I’m not much of an Idol fan but I was bored and flicking through the channels when I saw Jordin Sparks give her first live performance of new single Battlefield, which leaked onto the Internet earlier this week.

Set to be the first single from her upcoming second album, it is another collaboration with Ryan Tedder, frontman of OneRepublic and writer of huge R&B power ballads like Halo by Beyoncé and Bleeding Love by Leona Lewis. While Tedder’s antics should get rather tiresome after a while, Battlefield is not something your likely to get bored of anytime soon. Like I said it’s a huge R&B power ballad with a huge chorus and Jordin does the song great justice with her powerful, soulful voice. Expect plenty of crashing drumbeats in the song, it really has an epic quality and dare I say it, it’s better than her Chris Brown collaboration No Air which was released almost exactly to this day last year. The song is set for an Irish release date of 26 June 2009 and a UK release date of 29 June 2009 and a music video is currently being filmed.

So what I’m trying to say is this song is going to be BIG and definitely the big ballad of the Summer. I just have such a feeling about this song and I urge you guys to check it out on YouTube. I’ve never been crazy about Jordin Sparks but this song has my mind changed. It’s been hyped by critics everywhere so it should be a commercial success.

Also just a note on Jordin’s performance, I know this sounds horribly clichéd but isn’t it great to see her transform from a wholesome teenage girl to strong, confident woman all within the space of the year. Honestly, I’m still hard pushed to believe the girl has only turned 19. Did anyone notice this sudden change in Jordin?

I have to be honest, I’m currently getting Jordin Sparks mixed up with Jennifer Hudson – they’re releasing some very similar material at the moment. I can never remember whether One Step At A Time was Jordin or Jennifer!

I’m listening to Battlefield right now though. Initial impressions are that it’s a very different type of ballad. For a start, the lyrics are invoking a lot of military imagery about wars and fighting and armour.

The hook is very subtle coming into the chorus, but the actual chorus is quite impressive. You can see a funny progression of Ryan Tedder’s songwriting from Bleeding Love to Halo to this. They share a lot of similarities, but I do like his ballads. I have to agree that after a few listens Battlefield is a slow burner, but so was Bleeding Love. I think you’re right, it’s going to be a huge hit.

Haha it was Jordin Sparks who sang One Step At A Time. Yes, both artists are very similar but Jennifer Hudson has only released two singles over here Spotlight  and If This Isn’t Love.

Yes I agree that it is a very different type of ballad but I never really paid much attention to the military tone of the song until you mentioned it. I was thinking it was more of a 21st century update of Pat Benetar’s Love Is A Battlefield.
