Pixie Lott’s fifth single is to be Turn It Up, the title track of her debut album. That’s either quite impressive, squeezing that many singles out of a new artist’s first album, or it’s that the jury’s still out on whether she’ll be releasing a follow-up.
Despite kicking off her pop career with two Number 1 singles, consecutive efforts have peaked lower in the charts. Pixie’s last single, Gravity, peaked at #20.
On to the new single. Turn It Up is a fairly inoffensive slab of pop. To be honest, it’s the kind of groove I’ve heard a million times when someone’s trying to pitch a new girl group. Gives you an idea of what the vocalist can do, but is ultimately a throwaway track.
It’s a shame that this isn’t a stronger song, because I have warmed to Pixie lately. She’s a cute girl, got a kind of goofy smile and there’s the promise of a lot of fun in those eyes. She looks like the kind of girl other girls would like to hang out with.
I’m on about the tenth repeat of the song right now. The big reaction? It’s got a bubbly chorus, but it’s only moderately catchy. But then it took me a while before I was chanting “Gravity gravity graaaa-viiiii—tyyyyyy” in my head too. Still, with all the fanfare that surrounded Miss Lott last year, I’d hoped for bigger and better things. Let’s hope she gets a chance to deliver them with a second album.
Turn It Up is released on 7th June
