Following on from her floptastic debut single Massive Attack, feature whore Nicki Minaj is back with the more radio friendly Your Love. The song peaked at #18 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Can this video help it peak higher? Check out the video below.
I’m on the fence about the song. I don’t know whether I love it or hate it. I like the cool, laidback beat, the sampling of Annie Lennox’s No More I Love Yous and am a fan of Nicki’s flow but the little bouts of Auto-Tune especially on the “Your love, your love” chorus has the potential to ruin it.
The video, however, is wonderful. Despite being given a significantly lower budget than Massive Attack, Nicki makes the best with what she has. Standing amongst different coloured satin sheets and characteristically donning a number of wigs, the female rapper always brings something visually interesting to the table. I love how the video resembles a play which makes its low cost way more viable. Being a former stage school student, Minaj brings out the dramatics here but mainly plays it straight, leaving her often annoying facial tics and over-the-top antics at the door. I love how the red fabric floated out of her after she was killed by her love rival. Very creative. When her lover, played by Michael Jai White, turns up and cheesily shakes his fists at the air in grief, it felt for a minute like I was watching Romeo & Juliet.
Nicki says she dreams of visually becoming a black Lady GaGa. Judging by her two debut clips so far, I’d say she’s well on her way. Many people love to hate on Minaj and I can see why she is so irritating to some but you can’t deny that she’s the only relevant female rapper at the minute and definitely has the creativity to back her career up. Her album is released in November.
