Russell Brand arrested in airport punch-up with paparazzi

A bit of scandal for you this morning, Shout readers – flamboyant comedian/actor Russell Brand has been arrested after a scuffle with paparazzi at Los Angeles International Airport.

Katy Perry shed some light on the situation on Twitter -and it seems like an overzealous member of the paps tried to get a shot up her dress. Brand seems to have sprung to his fiancee’s defense and got involved in a struggle with the photographers. Here’s what Perry had to say on Twitter

If you cross the line & try an put a lens up my dress, my fiancé will do his job & protect me. #standbyyourman #don’tf**kwiththeBrands.

The end result was that Brand was charged with simple battery and freed on $20,000 bail. Brand himself hasn’t commented on the situation.

This latest scandal comes on the back of a similar complaint against American Idol star Adam Lambert, who attempted to take a camera off a photographer who was making a pest of himself.

Now, while I’m in agreement that celebrities choose to live in the public eye, I believe that the paparazzi need to step back and be less aggressive when pursuing pictures. Trying to get crotch shots of celebrities is actually quite vile (and I’m surprised that it’s not illegal). Perhaps the celebs in question need to arm themselves with a bit more legal knowledge and try to beat these guys at their own game. It doesn’t strike me as fair that someone can shove a camera in someone’s face and then have the legal advantage when they get angry about it.

What do you guys think – was Russell right to protect his fiance?

Now, here’s a novelty:  I am not a fan of Russell Brand at all, BUT, if it is true some pap was sticking his camera up Katy Perry’s skirt, then I can completely understand why Brand went spare, because, frankly, so would I have done.  It begs the question: did the pap do it on purpose to infuriate Brand and then get a reaction?  Apparently the pap who was allegedly pushed by Brand then made a citizen’s arrest.  So he was well prepared, it seems. Hmmmm.
