One of your favourite [[Doctor Who (TV Series)|Doctor Who]] characters will be going home in a box in the very first episode of Series 6 – and it won’t be a big blue police one.
Brace yourselves, legion of Whovians, because Steven Moffat has confirmed that a major character will die in the very first episode of Doctor Who’s sixth series. Nope, he hasn’t hinted, teased, implied or even misdirected the fanbased. Let me repeat: Moffat has confirmed to Doctor Who Magazine that a character will die in [[The Impossible Astronaut (Doctor Who episode)|The Impossible Astronaut]].
As you can see from the magazine covers above, it’s a matter of taking your pick from the four main characters – The Doctor, Amy Pond, River Song and gormless-but-loveable Rory Williams.
Sounding more pleased with himself than usual, The Moff had this to say about the now not-so-shocking death:
We’re not lying, we’re not cheating: one of those four people is going to die. When I came up with this heart-wrenching twist, I thought ‘We’ll kill off one of the leads in the season opener.’ It lures you in.
So, who’s most likely to die? All logic suggests Rory will be the unfortunate saddo to be shipped back to Leadworth in a wooden box. Let’s take a look at the possibilities though, shall we?
- Rory Williams: He’s already got great experience, having already been killed once and then erased from history. Why not do it again? And since he doesn’t seem to feature too heavily in the trailers, it’s a distinct possibility that the clock is ticking for feckless Rory.
- River Song: But…but…doesn’t she die in Forest Of The Dead? Yes, she does. But is there a chance that time will be rewritten and that storyline erased by the events of the Series 6 opener? Then there’s the matter of killing the greatest man she ever knew – does that point us back to Rory or even [[The Doctor (Doctor Who)|The Doctor]]?
- Amy Pond: I’m highly doubtful that the feisty redheaded companion will be killed off. She’s just too damned popular. And so much effort went into building up her backstory [[Doctor Who Series 5|last series]] that it seems crazy to kill off Amy! Besides, without her it’s just The Doctor traveling with Rory. Or River. But I don’t think Alex Kingston is appearing in that many more episodes.
- The Doctor: You’re having a laugh, aren’t you? Kill off the most essential character in the series? They wouldn’t…would they? There’s a school of thought that suggests The Doctor might be the one who dies, being arguably the greatest man River ever knew, etc. But I’m going out on a limb here to say that whoever dies needs to stay dead, and that won’t be the Gallifreyan.
Only a couple of weeks until we find out for sure. We could hunt out those privileged few who’ve already seen the preview screenings and ask them, but that would ruin it! I cannot imagine anyone other than Rory dying though – but what’s your take?
