Brucie won’t be presenting the Sunday night results show when Strictly Come Dancing returns for its eighth series next week. Instead, flavour of the month Claudia Winkleman will be co-presenting the results alongside Tess Daly.
Winkleman already presents the spin-off BBC Two show, It Takes Two, and with her growing status at the Beeb, it seems she was the natural choice for the results show. Mark Linsey, the Controller of Entertainment Commissioning said (in sentences perfectly crafted for a press release):
Strictly pioneered the Sunday night results format and this year we’re back with the perfect finish to the weekend. Tess and Claudia were the obvious choices to present and we’re really proud that a fresh Strictly will return with must-see, family event television.
Claudia Winkleman reacts with characteristic excitement about her new role and also gave frustratingly vague hints about the celebrity line-up this year…
I’m properly excited about working alongside Tess on the Sunday results show. I’ll be fully immersed in all things tango and sequin as I’m still hosting It Takes Two weeknights on BBC2 too. They’ve just told me the line-up. One word. Excited.
Admittedly, I’d have been happier about this news if they’d announced that Winkleman was replacing Tess on the show. But you can’t have everything, can you? I’ll issue the usual reservations about Claudia becoming hugely overused in the way that Myleene Klass was a couple of years back, but the thing is, I find her enormously likeable. Looking forward to seeing her on BBC One.
The press release for the launch of the new series of Strictly was singularly confusing, so I’m going to give you a blow-by-blow of the first couple of weeks.
- 11th September – The launch show. Don’t expect much dancing, it’ll most likely be a run-through of all the celebs taking part.
- 1st & 2nd October – The first live shows, split over a Friday and Saturday night. No eliminations on this first week, but the contestants will be scored by the judges. The scores will go toward a leaderboard for the second week – giving the audience two weeks worth of performances before making up their minds.
- 9th October – Second week live performances
- 10th October – First elimination show.
As well as that, we’ve learned that the celebrities taking part this year are due to be revealed on the 8th September. We know you can’t wait to find out!
