It takes a brave performer to take a hip-hop song by none other than master egotist Kanye West and transform it into a sensitive piano ballad. But that’s exactly what Dia Frampton did on last night’s The Voice with her rendition of Heartless.
Her performance was a little rough around the edges, but a bit like Raquel Castro earlier on, Dia was juggling piano playing duties as well as singing the song. But overall, critics were praising the haunting and mournful tone that Dia presented. No, it wasn’t an upbeat performance at all, but it was commendable that Dia was able to deliver an emotional rendition.
Christina Aguilera: It was very interesting. I definitely wasn’t expecting that from you. You’re so cuddly and sweet and cosy, everytime I see you I just want to curl up with you in a ball and watch TV on the couch. But tonight I saw the fighter in you come out. I saw the meat come out. I liked it. I enjoyed seeing that fighter in you. You should do more of that.
Cee Lo Green: Very original. That’s probably the best rendition of that song I’ve ever heard. It was dope. Kanye would definitely be proud of that. I’m gonna call him later on and let him know.
Adam Levine: That was the most refreshing, unique thing I’ve seen on this show so far. It was such an incredible idea. It was your idea, right? The best thing I’ve seen on The Voice so far. Definitely the coolest.
Blake Shelton: You took the words out of my mouth. This is my favourite moment of The Voice. For the first time, America has gotten a chance to see Dia Frampton do what Dia Frampton does. Congratulations Dia, this is a big deal. I’m very happy for you.
