Once upon a time there was a singer-slash-pianist called Vanessa Carlton. She became briefly famous for her hit single, A Thousand Miles. Hardcore fans stuck with her, but the market eventually moved on and we haven’t heard from Vanessa in quite some time.
Until now – newly signed to Razor & Tie records, Vanessa is readying her fourth studio album (her first for the new label). Called Rabbits On The Run, it’s set for release on 21st June 2011. The 10 track album promises “gorgeous, haunting melodies and finely-crafted stories”.
For the new album, Vanessa hunted down legendary producer Steve Osborne, and it was recorded in the UK at Real World Studios. Razor & Tie’s Beka Tischker speaks warmly of signing Carlton:
Vanessa’s latest album harkens back to the art of making records that take you on a journey, it’s refreshing and something you don’t hear a lot of today. The music showcases her depth as a composer, sensitivity as a lyricist, and her skills as a pianist. At Razor & Tie we pride ourselves with being a home that nurtures artists to grow and explore so that they can reach their full potential.
Check out this video of Vanessa talking about the process of putting together the album, from her decision to finance it and split from her old record label, to putting together the musicians and collaborators who would work on the recording with her.
I’m already liking the sound of this new album. If we get access to any early tracks, we’ll keep you posted! Don’t forget to visit Vanessa’s website for more info.
