Rumours that the Pussycat Dolls have split/are splitting up have been everywhere in the last few weeks. And an onslaught of denials has followed those rumours.
It’s all very sad, since the Dolls have really come into their own on this second album. I still haven’t listened to the full album yet, but the run of singles has been far stronger than the material they released from their debut album.
Anyway, I wanted to talk about Hush Hush, their last single. It’s been out for ages, and we’re still loving it in our house. It’s a complete, shameless disco track, right down to the Gloria Gaynor tribute in the middle. Who else could work I Will Survive into another pop song?
Miss Scherzinger is the focal point of the video (as usual), from a bath scene where her boobs defy all known laws of physics to a retro hairdo that is both hilarious and terrifying at the same time. And the Hush Hush video pulls off an intellectual reference – unusual for a pop video – to Escher’s famous House Of Stairs picture. The Pussycat Dolls truly are the thinking man’s burlesque act.
With such a pounding end to the singles from Doll Domination, I’d hate to see the Pussycat Dolls go the way of the Dodo just yet. They’re probably my favourite girl group on the pop scene right now, and I have high hopes for that rumoured third album. (That’s if they can keep their egos in check and their claws away.)
