Being Human (TV Series)

Being Human is a six part BBC drama series which follows the lives of three unique flatmates; a ghost, a werewolf and a vampire. A pilot episode was broadcast in February 2008 and the full series broadcast in January 2009 on BBC Three. Following a positive reception from the public, a second series has been confirmed by the BBC.

The main characters are Annie, a ghost (played by Lenora Crichlow), George, a werewolf (played by Russell Tovey) and Mitchell (Aidan Turner), a lapsed vampire. They live in a flat in Bristol, rented from Annie's former Fiancee, Owen. George and Mitchell work as orderlies in the local hospital.

In the pilot version of the show, the characters of Annie and Mitchell were originally played by Andrea Riseborough and Adrian Lester. They were recast with Critchlow and Turner for the six-part series.

Characters in Being Human

George Sands George Sands (Russell Tovey). George was scratched by a werewolf during a holiday in Scotland and subsequently became a werewolf himself. He's a quiet, socially awkward, individual who hasn't come to terms with his condition and struggles to keep his secret. During the series, he learns to be more forceful and falls in love with Nina, a doctor in the hospital where he works.

Annie Sawyer Annie Sawyer (Lenora Crichlow). Annie died in the house that Mitchell and George rent from her former fiancee. She's a kindly, slightly naive girl, who exhitbits poltergeist tendencies whenever she's upset. During the series, she discovers that she was murdered by her fiancee and takes revenge on him. She also meets another ghost and helps him to pass on to the other side. However, when Annie's turn to pass over comes, she turns it down to help save Mitchell.

John Mitchell John Mitchell (Aidan Turner). Mitchell is an 'on the wagon' vampire. Bitten as a soldier in the First World War, he was feared as a vampire, and stories of his exploits are still told among the vampire covens. He is torn between trying to fit in with human life and rejoining the vampires in their plot to take over the world.

William Herrick (Jason Watkins). Herrick is the vampire who 'made' Mitchell. He leads a dangerous band of vampires who are trying to convert humans to vampires. Their movement seeks to wipe out human life, except for humans kept alive specifically for the purpose of providing blood. Herrick tries to bring Mitchell back into the fold. When he eventually fails, he vows to destroy the housemates. George, however, leads him into a secure room at the hospital, transforming into a werewolf and killing Herrick despite the protests of his friends.

Anna's anger causes her to start behaving like a poltergeist, and Mitchell lands in trouble when he befriends a local boy and inadvertently lends him vampire porn. The neighbours begin a hate campaign led by the boy's mother. Meanwhile, George tries to break things off with Nina to protect her from his secret.

Mitchell rejoins the vampires and helps them infiltrate and recruit from the hospital. Annie confronts Owen, with disastrous consequences, and she sees the door that will take her to the afterlife.

George's girlfriend Nina transforms into a werewolf after the events of the Series 1 finale. Because of her new condition, the relationship betweent the two becomes tense. Elsewhere, George is set upon by two new arrivals to Bristol, vampires Ivan and Daisy. A sinister pair names Jaggat and Kemp are monitoring the three flatmates. Annie interviews for a job at the local pub.

Annie's relationship with Saul becomes more intense, but Saul has demons of his own. He attempts to pull Annie through the door to the other side, but she breaks free of him somehow becoming invisible to humans again. Mitchell and George become involved in covering up a vampire-related death for the vampire who helped Mitchell break his addiction to blood. Nina is appalled by this and decides to leave. As the episode ends, we see sinister Kemp making an approach to her. We have previously seen Kemp and his assistant kill a werewolf inside a pressure chamber.

Mitchell demands that the other vampires in Bristol stop random killings and go abstinent. He comes up against opposition, but when he decisively locks a rule breaker underground and breaks her fangs, he's crowned leader of the vampires. Annie, assisted by George, attempts to reunite her boss at the pub with his ex-girlfriend, now that Annie has become invisible again.

George decides to take tough new measures to control his werewolf side - by locking himself into a cage and taking a heavy dose of tranquilisers on the night of his change. This has unintended side-effects when he develops Tourettes and becomes ill-tempered and violent. Annie meets another ghost who helps her to defeat the dark spirits trying to take her through the door. Meanwhile, Mitchell enlists a reluctant Ivan to become the poster boy for his support group - despite Ivan not actually abstaining from blood!

Under pressure from Chief Constable Wilson to become his 'fixer', Mitchell is instructed to kill a paedophile, but can't bring himself to do it. Meanwhile, Kemp urges Lucy to stake Mitchell at her first opportunity. However, when Wilson's blackmail gets too much for Mitchell, he kills the Chief Constable and confesses his true nature to Lucy. George's relationship with new girlfriend Sam moves too quickly when he suggests they move in together, and Annie ends up looking after a ghost baby for longer than she expected when she does another ghost a favour.
