Dexter Morgan (Dexter character)

Dexter Morgan is the title character in the popular Showtime TV series, Dexter. Dexter is portrayed by the actor Michael C. Hall, although two younger actors play the childhood and adolescent Dexter in flashbacks.

The Character

Dexter is a blood spatter analyst working for Miami Metro Police Department. Unknown to his family and colleagues, Dexter is also a serial killer who tracks down uncaught criminals and dispenses his own brand of justice.

Dexter was adopted after his mother was brutally murdered and Dexter and his brother were trapped at the scene of the crime. The police officer who discovered him at the scene adopted him. Harry subsequently recognized that the trauma Dexter had undergone had led to him having violent tendencies. Harry then taught Dexter how to hide his unsociable side and appear 'normal'. These rules comprise the "Code Of Harry" which Dexter adheres to even after Harry's death.

Dexter's only remaining adoptive relative is his sister Debra, who is a homicide officer at Miami Metro.

Dexter has a biological brother, Brian, who returns to Dexter's life as the mysterious 'Ice Truck Killer', leaving pieces of bodies as clues to Dexter. When Dexter finally identifies Brian, his brother is planning to kill Debra. Dexter is forced to kill his brother, arguably the only person in the world who shares his problems and who he could talk to about them.
