Two series of Dexter have already aired, and a third series is in production and due to launch on 28th September 2008.

Synopsis

Dexter Morgan is a blood spatter analyst and part-time serial killer operating in the Miami area. His serial killer tendencies stem from witnessing the traumatic murder of his mother in a shipping container as a young boy. After being adopted by police officer Harry Morgan, Harry identified his need to kill and coached him in hiding his urges and appearing normal to others. Dexter refers to the rules Harry taught him as the Code Of Harry and often describes his need to kill as a Dark Passenger.

After the death of Harry, Dexter continues to track down dangerous criminals in secret according to the Code. Although adopted, he remains close to his adoptive sister Debra, who also works at Miami Metro.

Cast

  • Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall) is a vigilante serial killer whose need to kill stems from a horrific, repressed childhood trauma.
  • Rita Bennett (Julie Benz) is Dexter's girlfriend, formerly involved with an abusive husband and still severely traumatised from the violence she suffered. The relationship suits Dexter because she doesn't want physical intimacy and it helps him maintain a facade of normality.
  • Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter) is Dexter's adoptive sister. In the first series, she unknowingly dates Dexter's biological brother Rudy, who tries to entice Dexter to kill her with him.
  • Maria LaGuerta (Lauren Vélez) is a Lieutenant in Miami Metro's Homicide division. She's a career policewoman, intent on rising to the top of the command at Miami Metro, and frequently uses press conferences to make her name known. She initially has a frosty relationship with Debra, although she's obviously attracted to Dexter.
  • James Doakes (Erik King) is a former Special Forces operative, now a Sergeant in Homicide at Miami Metro. He seems to have suspicions about Dexter and frequently insults him and refers to him as 'psycho'. Although he has no evidence to back up his suspicions, Doakes begins to tail Dexter to find out what his secret is. Doakes's obsession with Dexter ultimately leads to his death in the second series of the show.
