Dollhouse (TV Series)

Dollhouse is a science fiction drama series created by Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon. The series centers around an exclusive agency where humans with custom-programmed personalities are hired out. These 'dolls' or 'Actives' as they are known have their memories wiped after each assignment and remain in a peaceful state until they are activated for their next assignment.

The series premiered on 13 February 2009 on Fox. It stars Eliza Dushku as Echo, the most requested of the dolls.

Cast & Characters

  • Echo (Eliza Dushku): Echo is the most requested of the Actives in the Dollhouse. Unlike the others, she shows signs of awareness outside of her programming. Prior to the Dollhouse, the only thing we know about Echo is that her name was Caroline.
  • Boyd Langton (Harry J. Lennix): Boyd is a former cop who now works as a handler for Echo. He's new to the Dollhouse and seems sceptical of their ethics. He also senses that Echo works differently to the other Dolls.
  • Adelle DeWitt (Olivia Williams): Adelle runs the Dollhouse. She meets with the clients who hire their Actives and makes decisions regarding their assignments.
  • Topher Brink (Fran Kranz): Topher is the self-proclaimed genius who developed all the technology at the Dollhouse. He looks after the programming and deprogramming of the Dolls.
  • Paul Ballard (Tahmoh Penikett): Ballard is an FBI agent tasked with finding and exposing the Dollhouse, which is thought of as an urban myth. Ballard is intent on finding the Dollhouse at all costs.
  • Victor (Enver Gjokaj): Victor is an Active who is designed to misinform Ballard and direct him away from the Dollhouse. He masquerades as a member of the Russian Mafia.
  • Sierra (Dichen Lachman): Sierra is a new induction to the Dollhouse. She forms a bond with Echo in the house which extends to an assignment in the episode "Stage Fright".

Echo is introduced as the most requested of the 'Actives' in the Dollhouse. She is fitted with the personality of a kidnap negotiator by Topher Brink, but the personality also has memories of child abuse when the woman was younger. Echo identifies one of the kidnappers as one who kidnapped her, but eventually uses her knowledge to recover the kidnapped child.

Echo is given a personality to be the perfect date for Richard, an extreme sports enthusiast and hunter. Things turn sour when he tells her he will hunt her and kills her. Lost in the woods, she must outwit Richard to survive without help from Langton.

Echo is assigned to befriend a pop star known as Rayna Russell and protect her against a murderous stalker. When it turns out that Rayna has been in contact with the stalker and wants to be killed on stage, Echo must save her, and protect Sierra, another Doll who has been assigned to the same engagement as a fan of Rayna's.

An assignment goes badly wrong when Echo - posing as an art theif - experiences a 'remote wipe' which puts her back in her blank state. She and her accomplices are locked in a vault, and without her imprint, Echo can't help them escape. Back at the Dollhouse, Topher theorises that Alpha was the only person with the knowledge to carry out the remote wipe.

Echo undergoes a radical surgery to allow her eyes to be used as cameras for an undercover operation. The surgery renders her temporarily blind, but she is able to infiltrate a religious cult.When a Government operation goes wrong, the cult members are shut into a building which is set on fire, and Echo has to get them out. Ballard tracks Echo down to an assignment, but Langton helps her flee before he can apprehend her. Ballard strikes up a relationship with his neighbour, Mellie, who is later revealed to be an Active. Elsewhere, Sierra's handler has been interfering with her and is given a dangerous mission by DeWitt as punishment. Echo receives an imprint which has been altered by a mole at the Dollhouse, designed to pass on a message to Agent Ballard.
