Firefly (TV Series)
Firefly is an American science fiction series that follows the adventures of Captain Malcolm Reynolds and the crew and passengers of the Serenity, a firefly-class starship that undertakes any task that helps make captain and crew enough money to scrape by. Their various dealings bring the inhabitants of Serenity into contact with a number of crooked characters and difficult situations.
The series was created by Joss Whedon for FOX and he also took on the role of Executive Producer alongside Tim Minear. It premiered in the USA and Canada on 20 September 2002, but was cancelled after eleven of the fourteen episodes had aired.
The failure of the show was blamed on both the low audience share and the fact that FOX ran a number of episodes out of sequence, including scrapping the original pilot and running it as the season finale instead.
The Firefly Story
Firefly is set in the year 2517 at a time when Earth's natural resources have been depleted and the inhabitants of Earth have fled to distant planets using the process of terraforming to create habitable environments in which to live.
This is where the idea of a new frontier in space leads to the idea of leaps forward in technology, but with the lifestyles and attitudes of the wild west.
Mal Reynolds is a former resistence fighter who fought in a civil war against the Alliance. The Alliance is a core of planets with the aim of unifying the disparate strands of humanity under one government. The Unification War was the one which Reynolds fought in and lost.
Reynolds and his crew operate on the fringes of society, selling salvage from abandoned spaceships and taking on dubious jobs in order to earn money. They try hard to avoid attention from the Alliance and also from Reavers, humans who have reverted to animalistic ways.
