Glee (TV Series)

Glee is an American musical comedy/drama series which follows the efforts of a high-school glee club called New Directions! The club is formed by the school Spanish teacher, Will Schuester, as a way to recapture his glory days in glee club. He faces opposition from the school cheerleading coach, Sue Sylvester, egos within the glee club, and he becomes torn between his wife Terri and Emma, the school guidance counselor.

Series Synopsis

Glee is set in the fictional William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio.

Cast and Characters

Glee features an ensemble cast of 12 regular roles and a number of recurring supporting cast.

Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) - Schuester is the Spanish teacher at McKinley. He experiences hostility from cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester when he revives the school's Glee club. He is married to Terri, a manipulative woman who pretends she's pregnant to stop him from leaving her. He also has romantic feelings towards Emma Pillsbury, the school guidance counselor.

Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) - Ascerbic Sue is the coach of the cheerleading squad, known to the school as the "Cheerios". She's barbed in her comments toward her co-workersm, and schemes to destroy Schuester's glee club at every opportunity.

Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays) - Emma is the school guidance counselor. She is pursued by the school football coach, Ken Tanaka, but has growing feelings for Will Schuester. Emma also has an obsession with cleanliness, and scrubs surfaces in public areas before sitting down or eating.

Pillsbury is described as "a germiphobic school guidance counselor who longs to be unsanitary with the glee coach, Will Schuester."

Terri Schuester (Jessalyn Gilsig) - Will's manipulative wife Terri realises that their relationship is foundering, so she pretends to be pregnant to keep her husband. When she discovers that cheerleader Quinn Fabray is pregnant, she approaches the girl to give her the baby when it's born.

Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) - Glee club diva, Rachel Berry, believe that she's the single most important person to join the group. Except she's at the very bottom of the school social ladder. She has a huge crush on Finn, until she discovers that Quinn is pregnant to him.

Michele says of her character, "She’s raised by two gay men, one Jewish and one African American. She’s very outgoing, a little bossy at times. She’s convinced this is her claim to fame but she’s got a lot to learn. She’s a sophomore and is learning about her vulnerability and she just loves to sing. And she’s really very good. So we’ll see what happens with her love life and performing life."

Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) - Finn is the male lead of "New Directions!", a jock who was initially tricked into being part of the team by Will Schuester. He's appalled when he discovers Quinn's pregnant - even though they've never had sex - and conflicted by his feelings for Rachel Berry.

Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley) - Mercedes is the sassy black female of the club, with an impressive voice and big attitude. She almost falls for Kurt until he admits he's gay, causing her to break his car window in anger.

Riley describes Mercedes as "a diva in training. But as any high school student, she doesn’t have her identity yet.  She likes clothes. She’s a girly-girl but with a little more attitude."

Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) - Kurt's your stereotypical campy gay guy. He has a love of musical theatre and Beyonce, and more of an allegiance to the girls of glee club than the guys. Best line: "I'm Kurt Hummel, and today I'll be auditioning for the role of kicker."

Colfer describes his character as "very fashionable, very low patience, and very vogue."

Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale) - Artie is the wheelchair-bound guitarist of "New Directions!" - he's frequently pushed around the stage by the other members of the band to 'join' in the dancing.

Kevin McHale says of playing a character with a disability, describing Artie as "a nerd but he thinks he’s cool. He didn’t get the memo that he’s not very cool. And he can’t walk. He’s in a wheelchair. But he forgets he’s in a wheelchair because he still does all the dances and everything."

Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz) - Tina was an early addition to glee club. She unintentionally causes a split in the club when Schuester gives her a lead vocal which Rachel wants, causing Rachel to temporarily quit. She has a terrible stutter when she's nervous.

Ushkowitz says of Tina, "Tina is a gothic stutterer. Her stutter is subtle. And Tina doesn’t know where she fits in, like the rest of the kids in the glee club. We’re kind of like the underdog/outcasts. You know, her closest friend in the glee club would be Arty."

Noah "Puck" Puckerman (Mark Salling) - Puck's a die-hard jock who mocks Finn for joining the glee club, until he joins Acafellas and realises that it's fun. Though he's Finn's best friend, he's slept with Quinn and got her pregnant.

Quinn Fabray (Dianna Argon) - Cheerleader Quinn is Finn's girlfriend and presedint of the celebacy club at school. Unfortunately, she's pregnant with Puck's child (they had a drunken one-night stand), but lets Finn believe it's his child. Terri Schuester tries to talk Quinn into giving over her baby to cover up for the lies she's been telling to Will.

Argon says Quinn "is very religious. She’s the captain of the cheerleading squad. She’s the captain of the celibacy club. She’s got all these things that are her. She can be so evil, but you come to realize there’s a lot going on with her."
