Series Synopsis

Steve and Becky are young, unemployed and lazy. All they want to do is eat, drink and have sex - so they do. They don’t want to get a job - so they don’t.

Lazing around in Steve’s bedsit, Steve [Russell Tovey] and Becky [Sarah Solemani] are happy to spend their days achieving nothing. Except watching DVDs. And playing on Xbox. And constantly teasing each other. But people are always there to interrupt them, be it Dan - the lonely bloke from upstairs, Laura and Paul - Becky’s sister and her fiancé or, most frightening for Steve, Becky’s parents.

Steve wants to be alone with the one girl he’s found he’s mad about. That feeling you get when ... you’re young and ... you know? The more he likes her, the more desperate he gets. It bubbles away inside him till it explodes, in the series finale, after a big, drunken night out.

Him & Her is an anti-romantic comedy. It lifts the lid on love as it really is - warts and all - with farts, bickering and toast.

Cast & Characters

Cast of BBC Three's Him & Her

Steve (Russell Tovey) is 25, tries to be laddish and usually fails. He’s unemployed, living on benefits, with no desire to work, no dreams or goals – and he’s not bothered. He likes eating, sleeping, drinking and having sex. He’s witty but easily outfoxed by Becky. They’re a great couple, but Steve will never fathom the inner workings of the female mind ...

Becky (Sarah Solemani) is 24, pretty but definitely not a girly girl. She’s also living on benefits because work is too much hassle. Like Steve she likes eating, sleeping, drinking and having sex. She’s popular - her friends and family adore her but she can never be bothered with them. She’s no angel, and can be sarcastic sometimes to the point of meanness, seeing straight through Steve. But in Steve she knows, deep down, she's finally found her soulmate.

Laura (Kerry Howard) is Becky’s 21-year-old sister. She adores Becky. She’s more fragile and romantic than Becky, and more prone to tears. She’s unhappy with her fiancé Paul but enjoys the glamour she thinks he gives her (he can get her into clubs because he knows people, and she finds him funny). Their relationship lacks the honesty of Steve and Becky’s. Laura finds Steve odd and doesn’t know why Becky’s with him.

Dan (Joe Wilkinson) lives above Steve. He’s in his late 20s and going through a bit of a crisis. He’s unemployed, lonely and needy - he often knocks on Steve’s door just for a chat when all Steve wants is to be alone with Becky. But Steve can't be mean to him because he knows Dan's troubled. Throughout the series, Dan is looking for love, getting over his ex-girlfriend Anita and going through a series of self-improvements in the hope that one day a girl will fall for him.

Paul (Ricky Champ) is in his late 20s and is engaged to Laura. He’s a lads’ lad – nothing like Steve. He’s amoral and easily violent when the mood takes him. He’s happy to sleep around, too. He also works in Rymans.

Episodes

Episode 1: The Toast - Steve and Becky are doing their usual thing– staying in bed and just about to have sex. Their plans are scuppered, however, when Laura turns up panicking because her fiancé Paul has stayed out all night. Steve just wants Laura to leave but has to cover for Paul ... and neighbour Dan wants to get melons. And eat them with spoons.

Episode 2: The Birthday - It’s Steve’s birthday and everyone wants to go out and get plastered - except Steve. He’s ill in bed. Or at least he tells his mum and everyone else he is. When Becky, Laura, Shelly and Paul can’t persuade him to go out and celebrate, Steve stays in and - with a little help from Dan - makes very good use of his presents.

Episode 3: The Fancy Dress Party - Paul’s son, Little Luke, is out of hospital so he’s having a fancy dress party to celebrate. Steve and Becky have to go. They don’t want to. Becky dithers over a spot on her chin. Steve can’t get through to his bank. But when a furious Paul comes over to see why they’re so late, and what’s happened to the sausage rolls, it seems they have no option but to go.

Episode 4: The Football - Everyone’s trying to watch the match between two local teams. Except Steve, who’s bothered by a dream he had about Becky and her ex. And Laura, who’s bored. And Paul, who is miserable after his mum’s shocking news. The afternoon couldn’t really be going worse until Steve comes out with what appears to be a ‘racist’ comment.

Episode 5: The Parents - It’s a Sunday and Becky and Steve are bored. Their fridge is broken and Becky’s parents are coming round to fix it. Steve’s never met them before. He’s terrified. When they arrive, he’s over-friendly and frankly a bit odd. Matters are only made worse by Dan, who’s audibly enjoying himself upstairs with his new girlfriend, Paris. At least he says she’s his girlfriend.

Episode 6: The Argument - Steve and Becky are drunk and arguing. They storm back into the flat, soon followed by their even drunker friends and Jamie, Becky’s oldest friend. While everyone drinks Steve’s drinks and eats all his food, Steve tries in vain to deal with Becky and her close friendship with Jamie. Eventually he can’t take it any more and locks Becky in the bathroom. He has something he really needs to get off his chest.
