Merlin is a fantasy retelling of the King Arthur story, imagining the relationship between a youthful Arthur and Merlin. As the title suggests, Merlin is the focus of the series, forced to keep his magical abilities a secret, and also tasked with preparing Arthur for his future as ruler of Camelot.

The series is produced by Shine Limited for BBC One and has been granted the family drama slot previously given to Doctor Who and Robin Hood. It began production in March 2008 and first aired on BBC One on 20 September 2008.

Merlin arrives in Camelot, sent by his mother to live with Gaius. He witnesses the execution of a man for practising magic, and realises that he will have to keep his powers secret. The story progresses as the man's mother tries to exact her revenge on King Uther by masquerading as a singer and killing Arthur. Guest stars Eve Myles as Mary Collins/Lady Helen.

An annual sword fighting tournament is being held at Camelot, and a visiting knight, Valiant has acquired an enchanted shield which can summon forth snakes to attack his opponent. Guest stars Will Mellor as Valiant.

When the waters of Camelot are mysteriously poisioned, Uther blames
Gwen and she is soon arrested. However, they are unaware that this is
the magic of an evil, yet beautiful witch named Nimueh. Guest stars Michelle Ryan as Nimueh.
4 The Poisoned Chalice     11 October 2008
Camelot is celebrating the union between the two kingdoms and when
Merlin meets Nimueh posing as a young girl, she tells him that Bayard
has plans on poisioning Arthur, but Merlin soon stops that as he
becomes poisioned instead.
5 Lancelot     18 October 2008
Lancelot visits Camelot and helps out Merlin by saving him from a Griffin. Merlin is impressed with Lancelot and tries to help him, but ultimately Lancelot ends up in jail.
