"Odyssey" is the season premiere of the eighth series of
Smallville.
Plot
The Fortress Of Solitude has been destroyed following the battle between
Clarke and Lex at the end of Season 7. 4 months later, LuthorCorp is
investigating the area when Tess Mercer arrive on the site and declares herself
to be the acting CEO of the company.
The crew are on the threshold of uncovering something that looks like human
remains when Green Arrow and his team attack the site. After disarming the
LuthorCorp guards, they investigate but only find Clarke's jacket.
Later, Lois Lane is posing as a cleaner in Lex's mansion, and manages to
smuggle a USB drive into her bra before Tess Mercer walks into the room. Tess
identifies Lois immediately, and warns her that she won't be as easy-going as
Lex. However, Lois explains that she isn't snooping in a journalistic capacity,
and that she's investigating the link between Lex and Chloe's disappearance.
Mercer calls security to escort Lois off the premises.
Chloe is being held at a facility in Black Creek, Montana. She is being
tested for super-normal intelligence, and is told by the lab technician that
she's outthinking their fastest supercomputer. While Chloe protests that she's
been denied access to a lawyer and a court case for hacking into NASA, she's
told that her rights have been waived because her hacking was an act of treason.
She is told that she has no option but to cooperate.
Meanwhile, Oliver Queen and his team are still searching in vain for Clarke.
His team state that they've searched everywhere, and come up with nothing and
they urge Oliver to accept that Clarke may be gone. However, he vows to continue
looking.
In the next scene, we discover Clarke is alive in a concentration camp, and
by the fact that he is struggling to lift cases from a truck, it is obvious that
his powers are gone. He argues with a guard to let him make a phone call to let
people know he's alright, but the guard is more interested in being paid back
money he claims Clarke owes him.
A delivery vehicle pulls up, and Clarke tries to make a break for freedom in
it. However, a gunman fires at the window and Clarke is forced to duck down,
missing the gate and crashing into some barrels. His failed escape attempt is
rewarded with a severe beating.
Tess Mercer visits Regan again, and claims that he's hiding something from
her. She threatens him with dismissal after he argues that his loyalty to Lex
shouldn't be called into question.
Back in Black Creek, Chloe is asked to identify cell phone numbers from an
obscure algorithm. After decoding two numbers, she recognises the third as
Oliver Queen's and realises she's being used to trap Queen's gang. She attacks
the lab technician, and tries to escape, but is quickly apprehended. Regan is
revealed to be her captor.
In Russia, Clarke makes another attempt at escape, but fails yet again. Just
as his captors are about to kill him, Oliver Queen enters, posing as a
businessman looking for black market caviar. Queen picks a fight with Clarke and
then makes a deal with the Russians which includes being allowed to 'finish
Clarke off'. Later, Oliver and Clarke discuss the possibility that Lex might
still be alive. Oliver reveals that Chloe wasn't captured by the Department of
Homeland Security, and they realise that Lex may have been behind her
capture.
In Montana, Regan taunts two of the captured members of Oliver Queen's gang.
He asks them what they were doing in the Arctic and questions if it had anything
to do with "The Traveller".
Meanwhile, Oliver and Clarke infiltrate the unit in Montana and decide to
split up in search of Chloe. During Clarke's travels, he encounters Lois
undercover as an orderly. They both take out her two colleagues and continue
looking for Chloe.
Regan gives Chloe a drug made from her own mother's spinal fluid that makes
her do anything she's told. He makes her decode Queen's cell number and they
discover that he's inside the Black Creek facility. He manages to inject Queen
with the fluid and gives him the command to find out what happened to Lex,
effectively pitting him against Clarke, the only person who could know.
After freeing Chloe, Clarke sets off in search of Queen. However, Oliver
shoots him once, then follows with a second arrow when Clarke denies knowing
anything about Lex's whereabouts. Queen sends a second arrow straight through
Clarke's heart. Chloe comes upon the scene and tries to use her healing power,
but it doesn't work. As Clarke lies dying, John Jones arrives and carries him
off, flying into space.
When Clarke recovers, Jones reveals that he healed him by flying toward the
Sun. However, as a consequence of that, Jones's powers have been stripped from
him. As they talk, Clarke reveals that he plans to leave the Kent farm behind in
search of a new life. He also mentions the need for him to be almost two
separate people, one of the key themes of the eighth season.
The scene shifts to the Luthor Mansion, where Tess Mercer is removing the
dust covers from Lex's office. Her assistant brings in a case retrieved from the
site, plus a photograph of a footprint that she says belonged to someone other
than Lex.
Closing Moments
At The Talon, Chloe and Jimmy are reunited, and she finally accepts his
proposal.
Clarke meets Queen and his gang. They decide it will be for the best that
they split up, after having their identities discovered by Regan. Queen jokingly
suggests that it won't be long before Clarke is sporting a home-made costume and
secret identity of his own.
Clarke makes a final visit to Lois at the Daily Planet. After some small
talk, he reveals that he's got a job with the newspaper working opposite
her.
