is portrayed in the series by the actor Zachary Quinto, although
before Quinto was cast in the role, stunt doubles were used to fill in,
mostly with their faces obscured by hats and shadows.

Zachary Quinto's first appearance as Sylar was in the Seven Minutes to Midnight episode.

Sylar's Origin & Abilities

Beginning life as Gabriel Gray, the son of a watchmaker, Sylar
believed that he had the potential for greater things. When he
discovers the ability to take the powers of others, he assumes the name
of Sylar from a brand of watch he is working on.

His original abilities were to understand complex mechanisms easily - hence his aptitude for mending watches - and to take the powers of other Heroes which involves removing the top of their head, ultimately killing them.

As Sylar has absorbed other people's powers, gaining powers of telekinesis, superhuman hearing, precognition and the ability to transform metal to gold (as per Bob Bishop of The Company, whom Sylar killed). Having opened Claire Bennet's skull at the start of Season 3, he now has the ability to self-heal, making him a formidable enemy.
