The Vampire Diaries
The Vampire Diaries is a television adaptation of the novels by L.J. Smith. The plot of the series revolves around a teenage girl, Elena Gilbert, and two feuding vampire brothers, Stefan and Damon Salvatore.
After being orphaned when their parents are killed in a car accident four months earlier, Elena Gilbert and her brother Jeremy are living with their young aunt. While Elena internalises her grief, her brother turns to drink and drugs to help him cope.
The series is set in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, which is a departure from the Vampire Diaries novels. The producers were unable to get clearance to use the original name, Fell's Church, resulting in the change to Mystic Falls.
The programme is created by Scream creator, Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, who also serve as the programme's executive producer and co-executive producer respectively.
Cast and Characters
The following are the cast and characters that appear in The Vampire Diaries. The character name is listed first, with the actor/actress in brackets next.
- Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) - Elena was recently orphaned when her parents were killed in a car accident. Still suffering from the grief over their deaths, she returns to school hoping to return to normal and worried about her brother's reliance on alcohol and drugs.
- Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) - Stefan is a vampire who has recently returned to Mystic Falls. He is attracted to Elena because of her resemblance to a former lover, a relationship that "did not end well". He has a frosty relationship with his vampire brother Damon.
- Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) - When Damon hears Stefan has returned to Mystic Falls, he follows him to carry out his promise to make Stefan's existence a misery. He is also responsible for the deaths of tourists in the area as an actively feeding vampire.
- Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen) - Elena's younger brother Jeremy has been having a secret affair with Vicki Donovan and the two have been taking drugs together. However, she's unwilling to go public with their relationship and seems to hold a torch for another pupil.
- Jenna Sommers (Sara Canning) - Jenna is the aunt and guardian of Elena and Jeremy, herself adjusting to her new role as 'parent' to two teenagers.
- Bonnie Bennet (Katerina Graham) - Bonnie is a friend of Elena, but is notable for developing psychic powers after her grandmother claims their family is descended from Salem witches.
- Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola) - Caroline is a friend/rival for Elena. In the second episode, Caroline is attacked by Damon after going to bed with him.

| The pilot episode introduces 17-year-old Elena Gilbert and her brother Jeremy four months after the death of their parents, as they return to school. Their guardian is their mother's younger sister. At the school, a new pupil is enroling, a vampire: Stefan Salvatore. Later, we discover that he is living with a descendant who refers to him as Uncle Stefan and challenges him about some murders that look vampire related. It later transpires that Stefan's brother Damon has moved to the town also and was responsible. Damon later attacks a pupil at the school, but fails to kill her. | |||

| Matt is concerned about the attack on Vicki and worried when she says it was a vampire attack. Stefan overhears Matt telling Elena this and goes to the hospital to glamour her into forgetting. However, Damon makes matters worse by both telling Elena about Stefan's last love and also by convincing Vicki that Stefan was responsible for the attack on her. After the brothers argue on a rooftop, however, Damon lets Vicki forget about the vampires. | |||

| After Tyler tries to humiliate Stefan, Elena convinces him to join the school football team. She also arranges a meal for Stefan and her friend Bonnie to help them get to know each other. Damon and Caroline crash the dinner party, and Damon talks to Elena alone in the kitchen while Stefan realises that Caroline has been glamoured. At the school football game, a fight between Jeremy and Tyler gets out of hand and Stefan gets his hand cut trying to intervene. Elena is confused when she discovers Stefan's hand is completely healed. Damon kills a teacher in order to prove to Stefan that he has no humanity left. | |||
