You may have just read that Katie Waissel escaped elimination on tonight’s [[The X Factor 2010|X Factor]] results show.
To quickly recap, Katie found herself in a sing-off with Simon Cowell’s boyband FYD. We were counting on a deadlock situation, as Louis Walsh had commented the previous night that he didn’t feel that he knew her. If Louis had voted as we expected, he’d have sided with Simon, and the elimination would have been based on the public vote.
But he didn’t. In fact, the only judge to attempt to send Katie home – predictably – was Mr Cowell. And he was only siding with his act. He actually took the time to compliment Katie on her sing-off performance.
So, Katie returns by the skin of her teeth and we’ll never know if she was the act with the lowest public votes. If you remember recently we asked if Katie could go far on X Factor when she was to flakey and obviously fake. And stories have sprung up, predictably claiming Waissel is a desperate fame seeker who wants nothing more than to be famous.
Now that she’s through, at least to the second week of live shows, we know Katie is a frustrating contestant.
On one hand, she’s an amazing singer, with a delicious raw voice. But on the other hand, she’s an annoying actress who seems to be playing an elaborate game. The problem for Katie is that people disliked her before she’d even sung a note. The public don’t like anything fake, and Katie was clearly a ‘character’.
It’s interesting, because she seemed so much more subdued on The Xtra Factor after the results show. She even alluded to her acting and how she’d stripped back her performance tonight.
I just wanted to take everything off. Not naked… I just wanted to strip myself of this character I’ve built.
From my point of view, I love her voice. I’d buy an album with that voice on it. But she needs to win back public support if she wants to win. She wound too many people up with her antics. And even more tellingly, she hasn’t forgotten her lyrics once in two live performances. The public will feel cheated that all the messing around at audition was a ruse that the X Factor production were involved in.
So, my question to you is – can Katie Waissel win over the public and reclaim her credibility to succeed in this year’s X Factor?
