After taking a lot of criticism last week for some ‘samey’ performances, Mary Byrne – aka Tesco Mary – has been instructed to mix it up a little.
So she sings Take That/Barry Manilow’s Could It Be Magic. It starts out like much of her other stuff, but thankfully takes on a disco vibe after the intro. In keeping with the Halloween week, Mary’s wearing a pair of red devil horns and is flanked on the stage by dancers inside cages.
In terms of performance, it doesn’t really work for me. The crowd predictably goes wild after the performance, but I didn’t feel that she nailed it. There was nothing ‘technically’ wrong with the performance, but I just didn’t enjoy it. Maybe I’m getting a little tired of her style at this stage.
What did you guys think of Mary’s performance?
- Louis Walsh: Mary, you belted out every single note in tune. Everybody in the street loves you. You are the people’s champion.
- Dannii Minogue: Mary, that was incredible. I really hope that you are taking all of this in, because you are a class act. I’m feeling like we’ve started the Halloween disco party already.
- Cheryl Cole: First of all Mary, good on you for getting into the spirit of things with your horns on. I think you could have gone a little bit more with I Put A Spell On You or something. You could sing anything.
- Simon Cowell: Liked you last week. Love you this week. You know what Mary, this is why we sit on this panel to help Louis when he’s in trouble occasionally. You got it really wrong last week, fun this week.
