Yikes! Michael Lynche saved by the judges on American Idol

We got another one of those OMG! moments on American Idol last night – Michael “Big Mike” Lynche was not only in the bottom three. He was the bottom. Lowest number of votes. Pack your bags, Mig Mike, you’re going home.

Except not.

Let’s rewind a little bit here. This is the aftermath of Beatles Week, possibly the most horrible theme [[American Idol (2010 Series)|American Idol]] can have. [[Michael Lynche]] performed Eleanor Rigby the previous evening, a performance Gawker described as:

shooting [the song] right in the face and then taking the exploded brain and bone and face parts and smearing them everywhere while smiling and jumping around like a giant, drunk koala bear

Ah, c’mon, surely it wasn’t that bad? Well, bad enough to alienate the audience and lose their votes.

Sharing the bottom three with Big Mike were country singer [[Aaron Kelly]] and semi-professional pop tune reinterpreter, [[Andrew Garcia]]. Aaron Kelly got an early reprieve, leaving Lynche and Garcia trembling on the stage.

In the end, Lynche got the least votes. Shocker! After losing [[Didi Benami]] last week, it’s a shock to see another of my personal favourites on the chopping block. However, there was still the issue of the judges’ save to consider. Lynche sang his version of This Women’s Work and waited with baited breath for their decision.

And surprisingly, despite rejecting Didi last week, the judges chose to save Big Mike. Speaking for the judges, [[Simon Cowell]] said:

The frustrating thing is, we all wish you did something like that yesterday, and this is why you’re in the position that you’re in right now. We only have one save in the competition. This is unanimous. We have decided we’re going to see you next week.

So, that’s Michael Lynche back in the competition. Despite the exultant audience, I’m sure Big Mike is wondering where the hell to go from here. Does he continue to be unique or does he resort to more conventional audience pleasing performances? There won’t be another save to rescue him next time.

Also, I don’t know if you guys heard it amid the hubbub at the end of the show, but two contestants will be eliminated next week to make up for the save.
