Doctor Who (TV Series)
Doctor Who is a science fiction TV series about a time traveler known as The Doctor and his adventures through time and space in a ship known as the TARDIS. The Doctor is of a race known as Time Lords from a planet called Gallifrey. He is known for travelling with a companion (usually female) and outsmarting a variety of adversaries, such as Daleks, Cybermen and other rogue alien races.

The idea of Time Lord regeneration allows the character to continue, despite the actor playing The Doctor changing.
Doctor Who is the world's longest running science fiction television show, having originally launched in 1963. The original run of the show lasted until 1989, and was almost resurrected after a 1996 TV movie. A new series was commissioned by the BBC and launched in 2005 to rave reviews.
Origins of the series
The series was created in 1963, by Sydney Newman and Donald Wilson, and the first ever episode was broadcast on 23 November 1963 starring William Hartnell as The Doctor. It was produced and developed by Verity Lambert.
Doctor Who Spin-off Series
Doctor Who has generated a large amount of spin-off media in the form of books, audio dramas, etc.
However, it is most notable for the number of spin-off televisions shows. The first spin-off to be broadcast was K9 and Friends, which was a vechile for the character Sarah Jane Smith. However, a full series was not commissioned, but a similar series concept was commissioned in 2007 and broadcast as The Sarah Jane Adventures starring Elisabeth Sladen as the title character.
In 2005, Torchwood was commissioned as a vehicle for the Doctor Who character, Captain Jack Harkness, played by John Barrowman. The series became a popular export and is about to enter its third series.
